APC Loves: Tobong Project

Posted on December 3, 2012

Check out the collaboration between British artist Helen Marshall and Indonesian artist Risang Yuwono in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia.

This is a community based project about the life of people in Ketoprak Tobong Kelana Bakti Budayaa, a traditional theatre group. In contemporary Yogyakarta these groups have slowly become more and more rare, ‘Tobong’ meaning temporary shelter that is mobile and usually used for an audience.

The project focuses on documenting the lives of this remaining community and the struggle to maintain their survival, by developing a community archive and organising interventions to attract new audiences to this type of performance art. The project aims to help people grasp a better understanding of the importance of these groups, to help them stand alone and  maintain these age old traditions in the changing contemporary milieu.
